Picture taken at Steenokkerzeel on January 6, 2009 |
The lower parts of Belgium had to
wait for more than ten years to see some real winter weather with snow and
ice lasting more than a couple of days. On January 5 2009, with some luck, a
descent amount of snow did fall over mid and east Belgium with depths
between 5 and 10 cm. The temperature remained subzero for almost a week,
lowest nightly value even -22°C. Outdoor winter sports like skating on
nature ice were "warm" welcomed. With further
global warming such cold periods will become rather rare events, so this
opportunity was grabbed to "freeze" some frames. Above shot was made with a temperature of -13°C. Captured facing a rising sun, it shows the village of Humelgem (near Steenokkerzeel) with several houses having a contrasting plume of smoke. In the back also a descending aircraft, more specific a B757-200(WL) of Delta Airlines coming from New York (JFK) as DAL140, producing an even so contrasting wingflap vortex.
