Contrailing propliners are quite rare as they fly at
lower altitudes where the air is usually a bit to warm to have condensation.
Nevertheless it occurs when an upper cold pool is present and in Belgium seasons
Autumn through Spring are favorable. But it's often accompanied with
lots of stratiform cloudiness, so invisible for the observer from Earth.
However on a handful days per year, the lower atmospheric layer is somewhat
free of clouds and with some patience the reward can be to see passing by
that odd contrailing propliner. Such was the case on November 27 2010. Contrails were visible between FL230 - FL330, the Ukrainian Antonov cruised at FL270 on its way from Ireland (Shannon) to Germany (Dusseldorf). |
