Picture of the month August 2010

Moderate to severe thunderstorms are usually
accompanied by dark threatening skies: just ahead roll or shelf clouds can
be present at the same time. In case of shelf
cloud, the form is
a low, horizontal wedge-shaped arcus cloud attached to the mother cloud
above. It is usually the visible effect of a gust front and when upper winds
are not too strong, the wedge shape can be very pronounced. Such was the
case when a moderate thunderstorm rolled in from the SW and when overhead
the sky was as dark as it would be half an hour after sunset although at the
time being still two hours ahead. It was accompanied with 35 kt gusty winds
and delivered little over 10 mm of rain.
