MCS thunderstorms with whales mouth.


Synopsis: advection of deep unstable air from SW. During the early morning two severe thunderstorms on a trough were advected from northern France. They caused large hail and flooding over parts of Flanders as locally within half an hour amounts of 30 mm water were reported. My area escaped and only a whales mouth feature was observed. In the evening another trough with fading thunderstorms were advected from France: again some threatening whale's mouth skies were observed in my area. All photos taken at Kampenhout in CET.  

 

Radar sequence between 0545-0900 CET. Note the severe twin thunderstorms over the Flanders moving NE wards. The upper echo moved slightly to the right (a so called "right mover" which suggests it could be a supercell). Tops went up to maximum 15km. (Source: Belgocontrol)

 

0849 NNE. Passage of the southern cell produced a gust front with whale's mouth. Only a few drops fell.

1929 SW. Panorama taken from a stitch of 5 pictures: shelf cloud is evident + a shaft of rain in the middle.

 

1930 WSW. When the gust front approached the sky became threatening interesting: whales mouth became visible.

 

1930 SW. Another view of the mamma alike clouds + rainshaft.

 

1933 SSW. Minutes later the mouth was opened completely and wind began to rise suddenly: the gust front has arrived.

 

1933 WSW. Terrifying skies. Lucky it didn't start to lighten or rain so I could stay in the open field but facing some blustery winds. 

 

1935 SSE. A look how the gust front passed by.

 

1941 NW. A look how the gust front passed by on the other side. Afterwards the rain produced 2 mm of water.
